Despite what surely must be the worst name for a film ever, a number of people recommended this film to me so I put it on my to-do list.
Josh Hartnett plays the Slevin of the title (is that really a name?!) who arrives in New York and apparently stumbles into a dangerous case of mistaken identity between two of the city’s mafia bosses (Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley).
I stuck with it for a while, but midway through the film I realised I just had no interest in anyone on the screen, with the possible exception of Lucy Liu’s character. The mafia bosses in particular are like shallow cartoon baddies from a kids programme and the twists and turns the plot makes just leave you looking for the main road to the finish rather than the scenic route. When the big reveal and tie-up of the story happens at the end it’s just a relief that its finished and you can get on with something else.
Stylish but sub-Pulp Fiction, sub-Things To Do In Denver, sub-Usual Suspects perhaps even? Just Sub.
2 on 5.
