Gran Torino

Gran Torino Poster

Clint! Good Ol’ Clint! For A Few Dollars More, Dirty Harry, The Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter, the DJ one (was it Play Misty For Me?) – loved all of them. That’s not to say he hasn’t been hit and miss and this latest film, rumored to be his last acting role, has had mainly positive but quite varied reviews.

Well, an elderly, bigoted, racist, world-weary Korean War Vet living in an LA suburb (I assumed) increasingly filled with Asian/Korean families growls for an hour and a half and then warms to them so much he risks his life for them. The film you are imagining now is exactly what happens.

The plot machinations are so clunky that characters drift in and out apparently only according to the narrative arc, the acting by Sue and Thao is awful and worst of all you have to put up with over an hour of racist comments before the character reforms enough to stop calling his neighbours ‘gooks’, ‘slantys’, ‘fish-faces’ etc etc.

Just not very good.

2 on 5.
