Donkey Punch

Donkey Punch Poster

Three girls from Leeds decide to go to the Costa Whatever in Spain for the weekend to forget their troubles and worries. They end up drinking in the bars and pursuing guys in an almost predatory flirty fashion. They meet up with some who work on a big yacht moored in the local harbour and decide to go back there to continue the party. The scene is set for a horror film and it starts off like ‘Hollyoaks Goes On Holiday’ with a mixed bag of acting. It’s the sort of film you watch because you think there might be a bit of action in but there never is, or because you want to see the violent event that breaks the happy atmosphere.

Your patience is tested however, as despite efforts to build the tension from the director some of the characters are just painful to watch. I spent half an hour thinking that Tom Burke’s Bluey character was a very irritating guy with some mental problems, but he turned out to be a very irritating guy trying to be all street and ‘I-beef-uh’ apparently without any mental problems at all.

As you wait for the violent event, hoping it befalls Bluey and think about getting yourself another drink the action does turn surprisingly saucy with some below-deck nudity and it’s during this scene that the violent event occurs. From then-on the film descends into a nuts and bolts slasher/horror and quickly loses any interest you may have had. For me Tammi (played by the talented and rather beautiful Nichola Burley) was the only character to find any sympathy or coherence with, which may explain why she was the only one to keep some of her clothes on – she had an eye on bigger things in the future no doubt. The picture below suggests a level of anticipation and horror that is sadly lacking in the film itself.

  1. Johny Royale says:

Did you really want the ‘violent event’ of a donkey punch to befall the male character freak?

    • Freak says:

Ah, yes, I see what I’ve done there. Watching the film I was assuming the ‘violent event’ was going to be someone getting an outboard motor in the face and I would have been perfectly happy for that to happen to Bluey!
