A feature composed of 11 short black and white films around the themes of social interactions over coffee and cigarettes. Filmed over about 17 years it is clearly a pet project of the director, Jim Jarmusch.
Some of the segments work and are beautifully shot and quite involving; Cate Blanchett plays two loosely related characters in an awkward reunion in one, another sees Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina in a satire about egos, Those Things’ll Kill Ya sees a rumination on cigarettes over an Italian-American table and another sees GZA and Rza from the Wu Tang Clan meeting with Bill Murray in a diner.
But for the few that hit the mark, there is a lot of self-indulgence and irrelevance along the way and an occasional weary feeling as another section starts.
