South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho comes up with a very unique horror/mystery suspense thriller film about unquestioning loyalty. You can tell it’s going to be an unconventional film with the opening shot of someone who is obviously the titular Mother dancing in a field of long grass with an almost expressionless face of perhaps remorse or sadness. The scene is revisited much later in the film when the backstory is known.
The Mother is played by Hye-ja Kim and is a single parent looking after her slightly simple (but never labelled with a specific condition) son Yoon Do-joon (Bin Won). He gets embroiled with a crime investigation, she is determined to prove him innocent.
The investigation takes some unexpected turns and new information is expertly revealed together with some humour and diversions along the way leading to a brilliant climax.
Weird and enthralling
