Gulliver’s Travels

Jack Black is cast as Gulliver in the re-imagining of the classic tale of the voyage to the little people of Lilliput. The opening sequences use some tilt and shift camera effects to produce some great miniaturisation shots of busy landmarks and venues, but the story begins with Gulliver as a lowly mail room guy for a big corporation, lusting over Darcy, the travel editor, but having harboured this for many years and never mustered the bravery to actually ask her out.

He ends up in Lilliput, first fighting against the little guys before winning them round and joining them. There are a few chuckles along the way (and some nice touches with his apartment and cinema), but it’s not a lot more than reasonably entertaining family fun and probably too long for the kids at that. Jack Black seems surprisingly stifled here and the big names cameoing are pretty much there for decoration.

Technically good, reasonably entertaining family fun.
