Seth MacFarlane is a multi-talented man, probably most famous as being the creator and writer of ‘Family Guy’. You probably knew that, but did you know he is also the voice for a number of characters in that show; namely Peter Griffin, Stewie, Brian and Quagmire. Okay, maybe you knew that too, but did you also know he’s a talented singer and pianist who released and album last year that has been nominated for a Grammy? ‘Cause I didn’t!
Well, this is his first foray into the movies – a feature length comedy called Ted. The setup is quite a good one – a young kid wishes his teddy bear could be alive and his best friend forever and his wish comes true. Fast forward around 30 years taking the story past its natural fairytale conclusion and a teddy bear is still John’s best friend, which is perhaps a situation you don’t foresee as a child making a wish! Seth MacFarlane plays Ted (both in voice and motion-capture for the cgi) and Mark Wahlberg plays John. Things are fine until John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) tires of their slacker ways.
The parts with Ted are mostly very funny, but it has to be said that interest wanes without Ted onscreen. In fact, it’s more than that: it’s almost like it’s wrapped up in another film. There’s the coarse, adult comedy surrounded by the Disney-like children’s love story. And they don’t sit together very well.
Overall funny, but ultimately awkward and patchy.
